Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)
Read below for a full list of FAQ’s that have been put together not only by us but also previous questions that may have been asked by other customers.
How should a baby be dressed when in the AmaWrap? I dont want my newborn to overheat!
You must consider each layer of the wrap to be another layer of clothing. So when your indoors you can take full advantage of skin to skin contact and have your baby only in her nappy, straight on to your bare skin if possible! Also your heat will keep her that little bit warmer anyway, so its probably best to let her go natural!
When out and about in the summer you can keep baby in just a layer of clothing, depending on the temperature. You will be able to gague whether they need to be warmer or cooler very quickly.
When out in the winter, please do not put a snow suit on your child. Your body warmth will be keeping baby warm, as well as the wrap and their clothes. If you gave birth in the winter you will most likely be able to wrap your maternity coat around the both of you!
It seems complicated.
It’s honestly not. The first time you tie the wrap and pop your baby in you will need to follow the instructions, by the second and most definitely the third time we guarantee that you will be able to do it with your eyes closed!
Will my baby fall out?
Not if you wrap it correctly. Make sure that you follow the instructions and safety guidelines, and you will feel totally secure.
Will it stop their development or make them clingy?
No. Research suggests that the more attached a child is to his caregivers, the more secure he will be in future relationships and the more confident he will be. Read more about benefits of sling wearing and research here.
Aren’t slings and wraps for hippies?
Yes, we have been asked this before! Wraps and slings are for anybody who wishes to keep their baby close while getting on with life. They are especially valuable for anybody with preterm babies as the skin-to-skin contact can actually accelerate weight gain and discharge from hospital.
What if I fall?
What happens when you normally fall? Never do you land straight on your face; your hands will always instinctively come out to break the fall. Wearing a sling can actually be safer than prams in many instances – while crossing busy roads and carrying the pram up and down stairs to name a couple.
I’m just learning and its either too high or too low – how do I get it perfect?
I give you 24 hours and I promise your wrap will be perfect! It just takes a couple of tries, as does anything. A suggestion would be to start tighter and higher, and after moving around for a little while the fabric will all adjust and loosen a little anyway. If its still too tight, loosen (not untie) the knot, let a little fabric through, tighten knot again, then work this excess fabric through the wrap to make it a little more comfortable.
My baby was born prematurely. Can I still use the AmaWrap?
The AmaWrap (and all other stretchy wraps on the market) have been tested from 3.5kgs to 15kgs. These safety tests are not mandatory by law, but just something that we personally like to be on top of. This test is a standard test (PD CEN/TR 16512:2015) developed by a national body. Unfortunately what this means is that wherever we would have had this product safety tested, it would only test from 3.5kg.
However as you are probably aware, kangaroo care is recommended for premature babies. I appreciate that it seems rather conflicting – on one hand it provides the greatest benefits to premature babies but on the other hand testing houses would prefer to conduct the testing for full term babies from a liability perspective! On a personal note, my baby was born prematurely and weighed 5lb at birth and I wore him from day two!
Due to the explanation above, I would not be able to advise you from a liability perspective, I hope you understand. I would need to recommend that you consult your GP. But should you choose to wear your baby earlier than the minimum weight then please do take extra heed of the safety measures found in the instructional booklet that will come with the wrap.
There is some interesting reading here that you may like to read about how babywearing is great for newborns.
